SoCal Regionals: JoeyD places 17th in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's first tournament
SoCal Regionals 2017 - the first major Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite tournament of the year - came and went this past weekend in Anaheim, CA. Gods and demigods of the genre were in attendance at the stacked 170-man tournament, including Circa eSports’ very own JoeyD, aiming to bring a little Midwestern Mayhem to the West Coast.
The first tournament of any new title is an exciting and unpredictable event. When that title is the newest iteration of the fast-paced, chaotic Marvel vs Capcom series, that sentiment is doubly true. On day one of SCR, despite the vast sea of hungry new players and grizzled veterans, JoeyD confidently sprinted to the Winners’ Bracket of the Top 32 with a wake of 2-0’s in his path - aided by his long-time UMVC3 partner in crime, Zero, and newblood Thanos.
By the end of day two, the dust settled, and the theme of the weekend was upsets, upsets, and more upsets. Players you’d expect to see in Top 4 ended their tournament run without even breaking Top 16; EVO champs like NYChrisG and RyanLV placed 25th and 33rd, respectively.
Circa’s JoeyD fell as well with a hard-earned 17th place under his belt, losing to Jibrill’s Thanos/Haggar in the Winners’ Bracket, and ultimately eliminated in the Losers’ Bracket by Nova player Snaketits.
